Gavin McKinnon

Gavin McKinnon

Gavin has been fascinated by birds since he visited Point Pelee National Park on a trip with family at the age of seven. Soon after he began exploring southern Ontario in search of birds. In 2015, he moved across the country to Calgary, Alberta, the city which he now calls home. While in high school, Gavin began leading short day-trips around southern Alberta, helping people connect with prairie and mountain specialties such as Thick-billed Longspurs, Baird’s Sparrows and Black Swifts in the summer, and Great Gray Owls and Snowy Owls during the winter. Gavin has extensive experience birding across Canada and has also spent time birding internationally in Central America, South America, Europe and Africa. He enjoys sharing his passion for birding with others through guided trips, and as a result founded Meadowlark Birding Tours in 2022. His focus is creating a worry-free and genuine birding experience on tours both in Canada and internationally. After studying Renewable Resource Management at Lethbridge College and a brief stint working in environmental consulting, he is now leading tours full time.

When not travelling, Gavin is actively involved in the local birding community and serves as a regional eBird reviewer for southern Alberta. He is also busy working on co-authoring a new book titled Field Guide to the Birds of Alberta.
